Tips for Checking Your Roof After a Hurricane

Conducting a roof inspection after a hurricane is a must for every homeowner. This is the only way you can ensure that your roofing system hasn’t sustained damage. Today, Sterling Exteriors shares a guide to inspecting your roof after a hurricane.

Roofing Shingles

Look for missing shingles especially on the lower section of your roof. This portion is typically the most susceptible to damage. What usually happens is the shingles in this part of the roof get blown upward—which is a clear sign of roof damage. Call your roofer immediately if you notice this problem.

You don’t need to climb the roof to confirm damaged shingles; you can have a professional do the inspection for you. But if you really want to see for yourself, make sure that the ladder you’re using is on a stable and flat surface. It should lean against the eaves too. Have someone else hold the ladder and look out for you as you climb up to your roof.

Attic

When inspecting your roofing system, don’t forget about your attic. Look for signs of leaks or wet areas on the walls, sheathing and the underside of the roof.

Flashing and Gutters

The flashing can sometimes be pulled away or get displaced due to high winds. This situation can result in moisture problems, particularly in the roof deck or attic. Gutters may also sustain some damage during a storm, so watch out for cracks or leaks.
