After your roofing project is completed, you might wind up with a bundle or two of leftover shingles. While you might want to save some for potential roof repairs in the future, you can also repurpose some in creative ways.
1. Roofing Material for Smaller Projects
Leftover shingles can be used as a sturdy material for smaller home improvement projects. You can use them to cover a shed, doghouse, birdhouse or similar outdoor structure.
2. Front Walkway
Lay a row of asphalt roofing shingles on your front walkway before winter weather sets in. The rough surfaces of the material provide traction, reducing the risk of slips and falls. This also eliminates the need to use de-icing compounds that might damage your concrete walkway.
3. Garden Path Underlayment
Before constructing stonework for a garden path, prepare the ground by laying down asphalt shingles. By doing this, you keep the stones or pavers from shifting out of place. At the same time, you prevent weeds from sprouting up between them.
4. Interior Decor
If you have a natural slate or cedar shingle roof, you can incorporate leftover materials into your home’s interior decor for added visual interest. Assemble an attention-drawing mural, a stylish accent wall or a unique piece of art. Depending on your preference, you could also paint or stain the wood shingles.
5. Canvas Alternative
Wood shingles can also be used as an alternative to canvas when doing oil paintings, for more rustic results. Be sure to coat both sides of the shingles with matte acrylic to keep them from warping and to preserve their color.
