1. After Installation, Asphalt Shingles Easily Lose Their Granules
Asphalt shingles have a top layer consisting of granules, which protect the roof from the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) light. It also gives asphalt shingles their color and other characteristics, such as solar reflectance. During the production process, these granules are crushed into the asphalt layer. You can expect excess granules to shed after installation, but this does not mean your shingles are losing all granules. This is normal and should stop after a few days or weeks.
2. Roofs With Dark Colors Increase Cooling Costs
Lighter-colored roofs reflect sunlight, reducing the amount of heat absorbed into your attic. This is why cool roofing systems are often white or have a light color. This may have led some people to believe that dark roofs probably do the opposite – which is to absorb heat like a sponge and make the interior warmer. However, while it’s true that dark-colored roofs do attract and retain more heat, it doesn’t really have a significant impact on your home’s indoor comfort or energy efficiency. With sufficient insulation and ventilation, a dark roof can be as cool as a light roof.
3. Roofing Adhesives Cure Immediately
Curing is a chemical procedure that results in the final characteristics and strength of the glue. Some adhesives cure instantly while others cure with the aid of sunlight, such as those used on asphalt shingles. Asphalt shingle adhesives improve wind resistance and often require a few days to cure after installation.
4. You Can Install a New Roof Over the Old One
Some contractors claim you can “fix” your old, broken roof by adding another layer of shingles. However, as any licensed roofing contractor will tell you, this will not produce the desired effects. New shingles must be fitted with a layer of underlayment and support, which means the old roof must be completely torn off and replaced to ensure the new one can effectively protect your property.
